Bringing a Cat or Dog to Australia: Choose the Correct Import Route
Start with the animal’s species, origin and history before booking transport. Australia’s import conditions differ by route; a universal six-month checklist or ten-day quarantine promise can lead to expensive mistakes.

Check species and origin before spending
Use the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry’s official cat and dog import guides. Choose the animal and exporting country, then check residence history, breed or hybrid restrictions and whether the route is approved. Do this before buying flights or starting a sequence of tests.
This guide covers planning for cats and dogs only. It does not establish that another species can be imported. If the country or animal is not eligible under the listed route, ask the department about the applicable conditions. Do not route through another country without understanding the required residence and preparation there.
Country groups change the process
Group 1 includes New Zealand, Norfolk Island and the Cocos (Keeling) Islands. New Zealand cats and dogs that meet the route conditions do not undergo the normal Australian post-entry quarantine stay. That is not a waiver of all import checks or a promise that every animal can travel.
The United Kingdom, Ireland, Norway and Sweden are Group 3, not Group 2. Group 2 and Group 3 have different preparation and permit requirements. Use the current country-specific guide rather than memorising a country-group list from a travel blog.
Record the exact route and version/date you checked. A previous pet’s successful journey does not prove that the same conditions apply to another animal or later trip.
Identity verification must occur in the correct sequence
For Group 3 animals, the minimum post-entry quarantine period is generally 30 days; eligibility for a minimum 10-day stay depends on the required identity verification or qualifying Australian-origin evidence. The identity check must occur before RNAT blood sampling where that route requires it. A private vet visit is not automatically the required competent-authority verification.
Read the department’s current identity and quarantine guidance. For UK exports, the specific official-veterinarian process matters. Do not assume an existing 30-day permit can simply be changed to ten days after arrival.
A minimum stay is not a guaranteed release date. Non-compliance or health issues can change the outcome and cost. Keep travel and collection arrangements flexible until the relevant approvals are confirmed.
Build the timeline from dependencies
Create one row for each required step: microchip/identity evidence, vaccinations, tests, waiting periods, permit, quarantine booking, pre-export examinations, treatments, health certificate and travel. Copy the required sequence and timing windows from your chosen official guide.
- Record which person or authority is permitted to complete or endorse the step.
- Put the animal’s microchip number on the records that require it and reconcile discrepancies before the next stage.
- Track sample, laboratory, certificate and validity dates separately.
- Check that documents remain valid on the actual export/arrival dates, not only when the booking is made.
- Leave room for a failed test, changed flight or request for more evidence.
Do not calculate a universal departure date by adding “six months” to the first vet appointment. Your animal’s route, history and correctly sequenced evidence determine the timetable. If a step has already been done out of order, ask the competent authority or department what must be repeated.
Request a quote with every component shown
Ask for an itemised quote covering veterinary preparation, official endorsement, laboratory work, permit assessment, quarantine, air freight, crate, transit handling and collection. Include taxes, currency, validity, cancellation terms and what happens if travel is delayed. Official fees and commercial charges can change.
Compare two quotes only after confirming they cover the same route, animal, dates and responsibilities. A low freight price can omit preparation or quarantine costs. Ask who will check document consistency, book the government facility and respond if a document is rejected.
A pet-transport company can coordinate work, but no provider is guaranteed never to make mistakes. Keep copies yourself and check key dates against the official guide. Paying an agent does not change the import conditions.
Plan welfare, arrival and the new home
Discuss fitness to travel and welfare needs with the treating veterinarian and airline. Check crate and transit requirements with the carrier; do not assume every airline or connection accepts the animal. Follow official instructions about permitted arrivals and quarantine arrangements.
Confirm collection or onward transport only when authorised. After arrival, check local council registration, microchip-contact updates, housing permission and any state requirements that apply. Import clearance and permission to keep an animal at a particular property are separate decisions.
Keep one final checklist signed off against the official route, not against this article. If a rule, appointment or flight changes, revisit its dependent steps before spending more money.
Frequently asked questions
Does every cat or dog spend exactly ten days in quarantine?
No. Routes differ. Eligible New Zealand imports do not undergo the normal post-entry stay, while Group 3 minimums can be 10 or 30 days depending on required evidence. Minimums are not guaranteed release dates.
Are the UK and Ireland Group 2 countries?
No. They are Group 3, as are Norway and Sweden. Use the current country-specific official guide.
Can a transport company guarantee a mistake-free import?
No. Check responsibilities, evidence and dates yourself as well as using any professional assistance.
When should I book the flight?
Only after checking the official sequence, required approvals and availability for your route. Do not rely on a generic six-month countdown.
