Understand your visa pathway, track your waiting periods

Compare pathways before you chase points, fees or rumours

Australian visa planning is not just picking the subclass with the shortest processing time. You need to know whether the visa is temporary or permanent, whether an invitation or employer nomination is required, what Medicare and Centrelink access looks like, and how the next step to permanent residence works.

This page is for skilled migrants, 482 holders, partners and students mapping the next move. Use the comparison below as a plain-English starting point, then open the calculators for your own points, waiting periods and cost range. Visa rules, fees and processing priorities change often, so official links are included where the detail can move.

Skilled visa pathways at a glance

Processing times are current broad Home Affairs program medians or official guidance, not a guarantee for a single application. Invitation wait time is separate from visa processing time.

Real visa-planning scenarios

The same person can have several possible pathways. These examples show which tool to open first.

Engineer with 80 points

An engineer on 80 points may meet the 65-point threshold, but that does not guarantee a 189 invitation. A 190 nomination adds 5 points and a 491 regional nomination adds 15, but each state has its own occupation and residence rules. Model 189, 190 and 491 together in the PR Points Calculator.

820 partner waiting on PR

A partner visa holder may be able to enrol in Medicare, but Centrelink is still more limited. FTB Part B may have no NARWP, while FTB Part A and Parental Leave Pay can have waiting periods. Use the NARWP Countdown before planning parental leave or childcare around payments.

482 holder considering 186

A 482 worker with a supportive employer should compare the 186 TRT stream, Direct Entry and points-tested options. The fast path is not always the best path if the occupation, salary or employer nomination is shaky. Use the Visa Pathway Comparison to map 186 against 189/190/491.

Visa & immigration FAQ

What is the NARWP waiting period?
The Newly Arrived Resident's Waiting Period is a wait before new residents can access some Centrelink payments. It can be 1 year for FTB Part A, 2 years for Parental Leave Pay, and up to 4 years for many income support payments.
What is the difference between 189 and 190?
The 189 is independent: no state, territory or employer sponsor is required. The 190 requires state or territory nomination, gives 5 extra points, and usually comes with an expectation that you live in that state or territory after grant.
How does the 491 lead to permanent residency?
The 491 is a 5-year provisional regional visa. Many holders later apply for the 191 permanent visa after meeting the regional residence and income requirements. Use the pathway tool before assuming your current address counts as regional.
How long does a partner visa take?
Home Affairs reported a median of 18 months for Partner Provisional/Temporary visas in March 2026, but individual cases vary. The permanent stage is usually considered after 2 years from the original partner application, unless long-term relationship rules apply.
What is the 186 ENS processing time?
The 186 sits within the skilled permanent program, where the March 2026 median was 10 months. Regional employer roles, healthcare or teaching roles, and accredited sponsor cases may be prioritised. Always check current Home Affairs processing guidance.
Can I work on a bridging visa?
It depends on the bridging visa and the conditions attached to it. Some bridging visas continue the work rights from your previous visa, while others restrict work. Check VEVO or your grant letter before starting or changing jobs.
Can I get Centrelink on a temporary visa?
Most temporary visas have no Centrelink access. Partner provisional visas and some regional provisional visas can have limited family payment access, but NARWP, income tests and residence rules still apply.
Do partner visa applicants get Medicare?
Many 309/100 and 820/801 applicants can enrol in Medicare once they have applied for permanent residence and meet the Services Australia rules. The exact start date can depend on whether you applied onshore or offshore.
Do I need health insurance on a visa?
Many temporary visa holders need adequate health insurance, such as OSHC for students or OVHC for some workers. Some people also have limited Medicare access through an RHCA or a specific Medicare eligibility rule.
