Plan for your baby, find schools, estimate childcare costs

Plan childcare, school and baby costs around your visa

Family costs in Australia are front-loaded. A new parent might face hospital decisions, childcare waitlists, school enrolment documents and Centrelink waiting periods at the same time. The right checklist depends on your visa, income, suburb and whether your child is already school-aged.

Use this page to compare the big family decisions before you open the calculators. The tools help estimate baby costs, Child Care Subsidy and school options, while the extra notes below explain where visa status can change the result. For school-aged children, choose housing and school catchments together so a cheaper rental does not create a harder commute or a surprise school-fee problem. Keep waitlists, inspection dates and childcare start dates in one shared calendar.

Australian school types compared

School rules are state-based. Fees, class sizes, catchments and enrolment documents can vary by state, sector and individual school.

School typeTypical costClass size / entryGood to know
Public / governmentUsually low or no tuition for citizens and PRs. Temporary visa fees can apply in some states.Zoned entry is common. Class sizes vary by state and year level.Start with your local catchment school and state education website. Proof of address is usually important.
Catholic systemicUsually lower fees than many independent schools, plus levies and uniforms.Priority can depend on parish, siblings and available places.Often popular with families wanting faith-based education without top-tier private fees.
IndependentWide range, from moderate to very high annual fees.Application, interview or waitlist may apply. Class sizes vary.Budget for enrolment fees, uniforms, devices, camps and transport on top of tuition.

Real family scenarios

Use these examples to decide whether to start with school, childcare or Centrelink.

PR family enrolling ages 5 and 8

A new PR family should find the local public school catchment first, then compare nearby Catholic and independent options only if commute and fees make sense. They will usually need passports, visa evidence, immunisation records and proof of address. Start with the School Finder, then call schools directly.

Working parents with two kids

A couple with two children aged 5 or younger may get a higher CCS rate for the younger child. From 5 January 2026, eligible families can access at least 72 hours of subsidised care each fortnight, but the percentage still depends on income. Use the Childcare Calculator with realistic daily fees.

Pregnant on a temporary visa

A pregnant temporary visa holder should check Medicare first, then hospital cost, private cover waiting periods and whether Parental Leave Pay or Newborn Supplement could apply. If they are on a partner provisional visa, some family payments may be possible but NARWP matters. Use the Baby Cost Calculator.

Family tools FAQ

What is Family Tax Benefit (FTB)?
Family Tax Benefit is a payment to help with the cost of raising children. Part A is paid per child and income-tested. Part B is paid per family and gives extra help to single parents and some one-main-income families.
How does the Child Care Subsidy work?
CCS is paid directly to your childcare provider to reduce your fees. From July 2025, families earning up to $85,279 can get a standard 90% subsidy, and the percentage reduces as income rises until it reaches 0% at $535,279 or more.
How do I enrol my child in school?
Contact the school or your state education department. You will usually need proof of age, immunisation history, visa or citizenship evidence, previous school reports if relevant, and proof that you live in the catchment for a zoned public school.
Do temporary visa holders pay public school fees?
Sometimes. Public school fees for temporary visa holders are set by states and territories, so a family on the same visa can face different rules in NSW, Victoria, Queensland or WA. Check the state education department before signing a lease.
What financial help is available for new parents?
New parents may be able to access Parental Leave Pay, Newborn Supplement, FTB Part A and B, and CCS. Eligibility depends on visa status, income, work test, care arrangements and NARWP.
How much is the Newborn Supplement?
The 2025-26 Services Australia payment guide lists Newborn Upfront Payment at $683. For a first child, Newborn Supplement can total $2,052.05 over 13 weeks; for subsequent children it can total $685.23. It is linked to FTB Part A and is not paid with Parental Leave Pay for the same child.
When should I apply for CCS?
Apply through myGov before care starts, or as soon as you have chosen a provider. You will need a Centrelink account, CRN details, your income estimate and the childcare service enrolment to be confirmed.
Are visa holders eligible for childcare subsidies?
Some are. CCS residence rules can include Australian residents, eligible Special Category Visa holders, specified temporary visa holders and some hardship situations. Many temporary visa holders are not eligible, so check your exact subclass before budgeting.
Do I need private health cover before having a baby?
If you are not eligible for Medicare, check OVHC or OSHC maternity benefits very carefully. If you want private hospital pregnancy cover, many policies have a 12-month waiting period.
