Bridging Visas: Work, Travel and Refusal Checks
A bridging visa can keep you lawful while a visa matter is resolved, but grant, effect, work permission and re-entry are separate questions. Use this checklist to identify the documents and dates you need before working, travelling or responding to a refusal.

Use this guide to prepare questions and organise evidence. Your grant notice, current visa conditions and the official rules control your situation. Grant, effect and cessation are different
An eligible onshore visa application will usually lead to a BVA or another bridging visa, often applied for as part of the same process. It is not safe to assume a grant merely from a lodgement receipt. A bridging visa commonly takes effect when your current substantive visa expires; until then, the current visa’s conditions continue. An EOI alone does not produce bridging status. Home Affairs: changing visas.
Do not ask for your current visa to be cancelled to activate a bridging visa. Home Affairs warns this can also cancel the bridging visa and leave you unlawful.
Create a one-page status record: current visa subclass and expiry; bridging subclass and grant date; when it takes effect; work conditions; travel-period end; and any decision/review event that may end it. Cross-check the grant notices and VEVO.
Know which bridging visa you actually hold
| Visa | Main distinction to verify |
|---|---|
| BVA (010) | Commonly associated with an onshore application made while holding a substantive visa. No bridging-visa re-entry facility. |
| BVB (020) | Can include a defined departure/re-entry travel period. It requires its own eligibility assessment and grant. |
| BVC (030) | Can apply in some onshore cases without a substantive visa at application. Do not assume BVA work or BVB eligibility rules apply. |
| BVD / BVE | Short-term status-resolution or other specific circumstances. Do not use a general guide to decide duration, work or review rights. Read the exact grant and obtain prompt advice. |
Use the official subclass pages for BVA, BVB, BVC and BVE. The letters do not indicate a universal hierarchy of benefits.
Check work rights before the first shift
- Identify the visa currently in effect. Do not give payroll a future bridging grant as proof that current restrictions have ended.
- Read the work-condition numbers and any limits in VEVO and the grant notice. Save a dated copy for your records.
- If work is prohibited or limited, check whether you can apply for a different bridging visa with work permission. Financial hardship may be relevant but is not an automatic waiver.
- Wait for the appropriate grant and conditions before working outside existing permission. Judicial-review and protection cases can have different restrictions.
Home Affairs guidance on working on a bridging visa.
Plan travel around the granted facility
Only a BVB provides bridging-visa re-entry. Apply and be in Australia for grant; wait for the decision before leaving. Home Affairs recommends applying no more than three months and no less than two weeks before travel, but this is not a processing guarantee. Supply the reason and intended dates. Official bridging travel guidance.
Read the granted travel dates rather than assuming they match your request. An expired travel facility cannot be used for re-entry. If you are in Australia at its end, that alone does not end your lawful stay; if overseas at that point, you need another visa to return. Other cessation events still matter.
Travel worksheet: write your outward flight date, return date, travel-period end and substantive visa expiry on one line. Allow disruption room before the travel-period end. Recheck immediately if a visa decision arrives while you are overseas.
Medicare depends on an eligibility pathway
Living in Australia after applying for a permanent visa (other than a parent visa) can qualify you for Medicare if you also have work permission or a parent, spouse or child with the specified Australian citizen, permanent resident or resident New Zealand citizen status. Combined 309/100 and 820/801 applications are included. Reciprocal-country nationality is not the only route. Services Australia’s applicant rules.
Prepare passport/visa evidence, application acknowledgement and any required family-link or arrival-to-live evidence using the Medicare document checklist. The bridging subclass alone does not decide eligibility. Ask Services Australia about ongoing enrolment if a permanent-visa application is refused and review is lodged.
Do not treat Medicare as Centrelink eligibility
Payments have separate residence, visa, waiting-period, income and assets rules. A partner application, BVA, work permission or Medicare card does not itself establish a Centrelink entitlement. Check the exact payment and subclass with Services Australia. Special Benefit is not a blanket hardship payment for every bridging visa holder.
Our waiting-period guide explains the questions to ask. For an urgent financial problem, record your visa subclass and the particular payment you are enquiring about rather than applying a rule for temporary partner visa holders to all bridging visas.
Three checks that prevent common mistakes
| Situation | What to verify |
|---|---|
| You lodge a partner application while on a visitor visa | The visitor visa can still control work and stay until a granted BVA takes effect. Do not start work from the lodgement date alone. |
| You hold a BVC and need an overseas trip | Do not assume you can obtain a BVB. Ask about your exact status before buying a non-refundable ticket. |
| Your BVB travel period ends while you are at home in Australia | Check continuing visa validity and future travel separately. Do not book a later return using the expired facility. |
These are document-check examples, not conclusions about an individual application. Prior refusals, no-further-stay conditions and unlawful periods can materially change options.
If a visa is refused: act on the actual notice
The Administrative Review Tribunal (ART) replaced the AAT on 14 October 2024. Not every refusal is reviewable and the appropriate applicant can differ. Use the ART immigration and citizenship guidance with the Home Affairs decision letter, not an old appeal timetable.
- Download the full decision and notification. Record when and how notification was received; preserve the email and attachments.
- Locate the review-rights paragraph: decision type, eligible review applicant, deadline and lodgement route. Contact a registered migration agent or Australian lawyer promptly if anything is unclear.
- Check your current visa’s cessation event separately. Review time and permission to remain are not interchangeable. Do not assume a universal 35-day grace period.
- Use the current ART fee and reduction rules for your decision category. Do not budget on a promised refund or assume a fee reduction extends time.
- Keep proof of any review lodgement, payment and acknowledgment, and confirm the resulting bridging position.
Migration review deadlines can be strict and the Tribunal may have no power to extend them. This guide does not calculate your deadline or say that lodging a review automatically preserves your work, travel or stay rights.
Keep a status folder you can use in an emergency
- Grant notices for every current visa, passport details and recent VEVO checks
- Visa and review acknowledgements, exact deadlines and adviser contact details
- Work-condition correspondence, any work-permission application and its decision
- BVB grant with travel dates and copies available offline
- Medicare application/status evidence where relevant
Update this folder after any grant, refusal, withdrawal, review outcome, passport replacement or departure. When asking for help, provide the actual letters through a secure channel; do not post passport numbers or case documents publicly.
Frequently asked questions
Does applying for a visa automatically give me a bridging visa?
A valid eligible onshore application will usually also involve a bridging visa application, but you must confirm an actual grant. An expression of interest is not a visa application. Keep the bridging grant notice and check when it comes into effect.
Can I work as soon as a BVA is granted?
Not necessarily. While your substantive visa remains in effect, its work restrictions still apply. Once the BVA takes effect, follow the conditions on its grant notice and in VEVO. A bridging visa does not universally inherit or remove work restrictions.
Can I leave Australia on a BVA and return?
A BVA does not provide re-entry rights. If you need to travel while relying on a bridging visa, check BVB eligibility and obtain a grant before departure. Only travel within its granted travel period; a pending BVB application is not travel permission.
Does a BVB travel-period end mean I must leave Australia?
If you are in Australia, the travel-period end does not by itself require departure. It stops use of that travel facility. Other events can end the visa. If you are overseas when the travel period ends, you cannot return on that BVB.
Does a refusal give everyone the same time to appeal?
No. Read the decision notification immediately for whether review is available, who may apply, the tribunal and exact deadline. Check visa cessation separately. Do not use a generic grace period or assume the ART can extend a migration review deadline.
